Zoning Of Political Offices Does Not Produce Good Leaders – Tambuwal

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, has kicked against the zoning of political offices among different regions of the country, saying that the idea is a threat to good governance.
Tambuwal made this remark in Lagos on Thursday, while speaking at the 5th Nigerian Leadership Conference under the theme “The Christopher Kolade Symposium.’’

According to him, the practice is encouraging the emergence of mediocre leadership.
He noted that the choice of those who should occupy leadership positions should be determined by people’s will.

The speaker who was represented by the House Minority Leader, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, added that zoning was a form of imposition of leadership.

He said, “Honestly, this idea of turn-by-turn arrangement in the holding of political offices does not produce the best leaders.

“Rotation of the Senate President’s seat, Office of the Governor or the zoning the Office of the President, based on sectional considerations, is not the best for us.

“It constricts the space, from which good leadership emerges and it also threatens good governance which is an ingredient for development,’’ he added.
The speaker, who lamented the ongoing leadership tussle in the country, said that the problem had hindered Nigeria’s efforts towards attaining sustainable development.
