E*X*P*R*E*S*S*I*V*E: Oh, I Greatly Miss Late President Yar’Adua

Oh, I Greatly Miss Late President Yar’Adua

When Justice Abdu Karafaraty of the High Court delivered judgement pronounced the candidature of the ousted governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola as the People’s Democratic Party’s National Secretary illegal, it didn’t take up to 24 hours before the party’s National Legal Adviser,  Mr. Victor Kwom swore in the incumbent scribe, who co-incidentally is the former’s state kinsman. It was not too long when the party went into both electronic and print media to pride itself as a ‘Rule of Law’ advocate. One would ordinarily have expected the party to toe the same path of Rule of Law when the order of the lower court was set aside by the Court of Appeal, and thus swear in the ousted scribe with the same celerity with which it did in the penultimate judgement. But nay, to prove its worth as a party with no regard for the judiciary, it has inter alia continued to dilly-dally on the matter.

Anyways, that’s just by the way, I was just passing by. My main grouse this morning is an appeal to the Mayor of Abuja City, the alMIGHTY Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, distinguished Senator Bala Muhammed to halt his proposed construction of Abuja City Gate at a whopping sum of N64billion. Your excellency, sir, the construction of a City Gate for now should be our least priority. Need I remind you, sir that barely a year ago, your administration scrapped (or do I say banned) the commercial buses popularly dubbed ‘danfo’ plying the city centre en route satellite towns. I remember you making promises heaven and earth that your administration would put in place a proper mechanism that would cushion the effect(s) of such policy on commuters. True to your words, you brought in some second-hand ‘Marcopollo’ buses which could not even cater for just a route.

Your excellency, may I crave your indulgence that you please take a cruise round the City Centre at the later hours of the day, say something between the hours of 4 and 5pm when majority of the workers will have been through for the day, and when you move round, please check areas like Moshalashi Junction (i.e National Mosque); Eagle’s Square; Wuse Market; Area 3; Area 1, Berger Junction to mention but just a few and see the kind of hardship you have put the hapless masses into. We are not saying you should not give the status of its master plan, but what we are saying here is that adequate provisions should be made for the aftermaths of your policies. You banned commercial buses and replaced them with less than 40 or so ‘El-Rufais’ (as they are popularly called) and here you are planning to construct worthless City Gates. That overtly is the height of insensitivity!

I think there are several questions begging for answers here if only one can ask: What has gone wrong with the current gate to warrant a new one? Must we duplicate city gate at the expense of other meaningful projects that are begging for attention? How does this translate into food for the ordinary man on the street? N64billion for City Gates! Habaaa! Mr Bala, do you guys even think of posterity at all? Does it ever cross your mind that there is something called NEMESIS? There are a million and one citizens who feed on 1-0-0, some on 0-1-0 while some others opt for 0-0-1 formula and here we are throwing monies into the gallows. We are coming for you dudes, for real!
