Controversial Letter: Nyako Insists He Will Not Apologize, Carpets Northern Governors
Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State yesterday said that he stands resolutely firm by the memo he sent to northern governors.
His Director of Press and Public Affairs to the governor, Mallam Ahmed Sajoh, told Leadership Newspaper on Sunday that his boss insists on his words as nothing has changed to warrant a retraction of the letter.
The governor, who lashed at his northern colleagues, charged them to be more serious in tacking the security challenges bedeviling the region.
Nyako lamented that rather than dwell on security, educational, economic and social challenges bedeviling the north, his colleagues often like to dwell on Sardauna Foundation which is of less importance to the north, considering the serious challenges confronting it.
The governor said he refused to attend the just concluded Northern Governors Forum meeting because the governors did not show adequate resolve towards addressing the security issues currently festering in the region but rather decided to be toying with it.
According to him, despite the deluge of security problems afflicting the region, the northern governors said they would deal with only the farmers/herdsmen clashes instead of dealing holistically with the security drift in the region.
Nyako stated that the second reason he failed to attend the meeting was that the Northern Governors Forum has refused to convene a northern caucus meeting so as to coherently articulate their views and missions before the enlarged security meeting, which was another pointer to the non-seriousness of the northern governors towards the security malaise affecting the region.
The governor maintained he reserved no apology for the leakage of the memo which generated the current debate. On two previous occasions, he has written similar memos to the presidency and they were not replied, he said, adding that with such disposition, he has no misgivings against the leakage of the letter and that he would not apologize to anybody.
