Former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi has emerged as the new Emir of Kano. Secretary to the Kano State Government, Rabiu Sulaiman confirmed this to newsmen several hours ago.
The embattled former Apex bank Governor had while in office showed deep interest in the throne, and has been in a running battle since the death of the late Emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero.
Recall that the Kano state Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso had declared earlier that a new Emir would be announced on Sunday to immediately take over from the late Emir, Ado Bayero. Since then, there has been tension in Kano state as security was said to have been beefed up to forestall any kind of lawless act resulting from the struggle for the throne.
Kwankwaso in his announcement yesterday said, “Insha Allah, by tomorrow those who are responsible to announce the new Emir will do so”
He however declined to mention names of the contenders for the royal throne presented to him by the four kingmakers – Madakin Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Nabahani; Sarkin Bai, Alhaji Muktari Adnan; Sarkin Dawaki mai tuta, Alhaji Bello Abubakar; and Makaman Kano, Alhaji Abdullahi Sarki Ibrahim.
However, a ‘bird in the know’ told DailyPost yesterday that the major contenders for the Emir’s role were his first son, Sanusi Lamido Ado Bayero; a former journalist who graduated from Bayero University, Kano, and former pilot with the defunct Kabo Air, Aminu Ado Bayero; and the Turakin Kano, Nasiru Ado Bayero.
From the other ruling families, those who contended for the royal post included the Galadima Kano, Tijani Hashim; Wamban Kano, Ajhaji Abbas Sanusi; and former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
As the final announcement drew close, the Kano Emirate Council Sunday morning recommended the former CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and the first son of the late Emir of Kano, Ciroman Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Ado Bayero, who was considered the more popular choice.
But having considered the pressure mounted on the Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso by the chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had converged in Kano since Friday to lobby for Sanusi, his emergence became possible.
Sanusi is the grandson of the 11th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi and was turbaned the Giwar Dan Majen Kano in 2013.
