Lagos
State governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, on Saturday expressed delight at the mass
defection of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), members to the All Progressives
Congress (APC).
He
said the fact that the event held in a day the president and leader of the
nation’s ruling party, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, was still in Lagos on a visit, was
a sign that the party had failed.
The
defectors, who were led by a one-time chieftain of the PDP in the state, Dr
Abayomi Finnih, were received at the Acme Road secretariat of APC in a
colourful ceremony.
While
welcoming the new members, Fashola described the defection as a landmark which
showed that the PDP was heading for doom in 2015.
According
to him, “When you see former governors, national office holders and so on and
so forth leaving in droves even when the leader of the party is in town, it is
a great coincidence, but it is also a sign that the giant is beginning to fall.
“For
me, it is interesting that a party loses five governors without going to an
election. It is worth the Guinness Book of Records. And it will interest you
that things are no longer well in that party.
“They
lose governors, they lose senators and without going to an election they lose
leaders of the House.”
Commenting
on the 2015 elections in Lagos vis-à-vis the PDP, Fashola boasted, “They are
our opponents and we will continue to defeat them in elections in which a fair
contest is made possible”.
