Delta 2015: “I Play Politics With The Fear Of God” – Senator Okowa Denies Allegations Of Violence, Cultism

The Senator representing Delta North Senatorial District, Ifeanyi Aurthur Okowa, has described the allegation of sponsoring a killer squad ahead of the 2015 governorship election in Delta State as unfortunate.

Senator Okowa, who is a major contender in the race to succeed Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, once served as the Secretary, Ika Local Government Area and Pioneer Chairman, Ika North-East Local Government Area.

He was also a Commissioner in different ministries and later Secretary to the State Government in the Uduaghan administration.

Reacting to the violence that erupted following the defacing of his campaign billboards at the College of Education Roundabout in Agbor last weekend, Okowa reiterated that he does not patronise violence.

One Sunny Okonye was feared dead after the unrest with his family vowing to pursue the matter to a logical conclusion.

In a statement signed by his Personal Assistant, Hillary Ibegbulem, the Senator wondered why his opponents would descend to the extent of maligning him.

He said: “I have played politics with the fear of God believing that it is God that gives power to whoever he wishes. It is unfortunate that those who are known to play politics of violence, sponsor cult groups and have killer squads are the same persons sponsoring people to malign my name.

“To keep the records straight, I have not sponsored any billboard on my governorship ambition, so I do not see why I should fight over billboards that I do not know their locations.

“The allegation levelled against me in a press briefing held at the Royal Court Yard Hotel, Agbor, is malicious, untrue and sponsored by those who see me as thorns in their flesh in the politics of the state out of envy.”

Okowa also refuted assertion that his aide led a gang in an attempt to murder late Sunny Okonye.

According to him, “On the fateful day, I travelled to Lagos with Hilary on Friday 16th May, 2014 with the 5.00pm Arik Flight and left Lagos with him on Monday 19th May, 2014 to Abuja with the 3pm Arik flight. Hilary checked into Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Lagos on the said Friday through to Monday, 19th May, 2014 and the records of the hotel are available for check.”

Believing the set-up was aimed at discrediting him ahead of the 2015 gubernatorial poll, the former SSG noted that, “it has always been in their plans to pull me down by all means, but God has always seen me through, and will continue to protect me against these envious politicians who are enemies of progress.”
