In his first interview since he was sacked as Tottenham Hotspur manager, Andre Villas-Boas has claimed that Gareth Bale plays better for Real Madrid, when Cristiano Ronaldo is not in the team.
The Portuguese tactician, who refused to speak about his latest failure in English football, was in charge of Spurs when Bale was sold for a world-record fee. Villas-Boas then went ahead to splash the jackpot on seven players, who have so far failed to gel, which eventually led to bad results and his subsequent dismissal.
However, he was keen to speak about his former protege, who has began life well in La Liga.
“Bale performs better without Ronaldo, he has a far greater role in Madrid’s play when Cristiano isn’t playing,” AVB told O Jogo.
“When there are two quality players like them two in the team, they have to share the team’s chances.
“At Tottenham, Bale adapted to a playing style that allowed him to have the starring role, one which made him his team’s most important player. In doing so, he saw more of the ball and increased his goalscoring chances.
“He’s already a world-class footballer. The question is whether he can reproduce his Tottenham form playing alongside the world’s best player.”
