Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has questioned
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho's decision to sell midfielder Juan Mata to the
Barclays Premier League champions Manchester United.
The Spain playmaker
is expected to complete his move to Old Trafford this week after undergoing a
medical at the club's Carrington training base.
United are pressing
forward with the £37million deal after making a dreadful start to life under
David Moyes, which sees them languishing in seventh place in the league - six
points off the Champions League spots.
They were also beaten on penalties by Sunderland
in the Capital One Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday and were dumped out
of the FA Cup by Swansea.
The deal could
breathe life into United's season, a move which Arsenal boss Wenger is
struggling to understand.
He said: 'I'm
surprised Mata is allowed to go because he is a great player. And Chelsea are
strengthening a direct opponent.
'It opens up transfer
market, Chelsea don't play United again. They could have sold Mata two weeks
ago.'
Arsenal face an FA
Cup fourth-round date with Coventry City on Friday night and the Gunners have
been boosted by the return of a number of key personnel.
Theo Walcott is out
for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury, but Aaron Ramsey,
Nicklas Bendtner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are all set to return.
And the French boss
delivered some positive news on defender Thomas Vermaelen's future.
'We've got Ox back
and Ramsey and Arteta back. Sanogo is coming back but we have a strong squad.
'If something
exceptional comes up then we will try to do it.'
