Portugal captain and Real Madrid striker, Cristiano Ronaldo, on Monday won the FIFA World Footballer of the Year award, the Balon d’Or.
The Portuguese beat the other contenders -Argentina’s and Barcelona Lionel Messi and Frenchman and Bayern Munich winger, Frank Ribery- to pick the award for 2013.
At the ceremony, held in Zurich, Switzerland, former Brazilian striker Pele, picked and announced the winner, witnessed by FIFA President Sepp Blatter, and EUFA President, Mitchel Platini.
Ronaldo, who broke into tears while receiving the award, thanked his supporters and teammates for supporting him to win the award .
